"Getting a break" from the demands of parenting is important to any parent. Unfortunately, taking time out from the tremendous demands on foster parents is often very difficult and problematic. Government rules and requirements, as well as the difficult behaviors and complex needs of many children in foster care, make finding the necessary break sometimes impossible to attain. Respite care continues to be one of the major areas of need for our foster parent families.
The benefits of respite programs are numerous. Research has shown that respite services decrease the likelihood of child abuse or neglect and help promote family unity and decrease disruption in the home. Through respite programs, parents have a chance to relax and reenergize so they can continue providing the best care for their children.
The Washington Metropolitan Council of Governements in collaboration with the Freddie Mac Foundation provides Saturday respite and overnight respite services for children in the DC foster care system.
Foster parents who would like to pre-register for services contact the Respite Coordinator at (202) 962-3215. Overnight respite is available once a month. The Super Saturdays (on-site educational and recreational activities) are located in DC. Foster parents must call to register for all programs.
